Music Video analysis 1
This music video for the new song from "The Prodigy" - "Invaders Must Die" caught my eye when watching it because it has some very interesting camera angles and some good editing techniques along with some effects that work well with the music such as the color correction, and the tinting of certain colours.
I really like the way that the shots are cut in time to the music, like at the very beginning as the music starts to pick up pace, the shots are very short, showing the same thing from a few different angles, getting allot of coverage of the content in the scene, and showing the pace of the music visually as well as audibly.
The way that the video is cut in time to the music is a recurring theme throughout the entire video, there are allot of short cuts that change angle on the same item within the scene but in such a way that it keeps the viewers interested.
The narrative of the video is very clear, although some of the lyrics are not instantly understandable, the video does very well to describe visually what you can't hear in the music. With a clearly progressing story to the video, the audience can determine what is going on in the song for themselves, although this is a vital part in some music videos, it is not always necessary, for instance the music video for "kylie" - "Come into my world" has very little narrative, and is just one long shot with slowly progressing additions to the video, repeating kylie over and over again while every time she passes the point at which she started another kylie comes out and does some thing different. Some may argue that this is part of a narrative to the video, but personally I think that the director Micheal Gondry was just playing around with the cool effects that he could achieve and was not trying to really put narrative in the video.
The camerawork throughout the video is clever, framing the actor perfectly in every shot that he is in, while also showing just enough of the background and scenery to give the audience a taster of where the character is and what he is doing. A few very quick and bouncy zoom shots which may have been done in post production work well with the music, staying in time with the beat of the music, they add emphasis to the narrative and the importance of the characters location and feelings, a quick jolt to show that the character might be nervous or in trouble of some kind.
Another thing within the video that adds to the videos aura is the costume that the actor is wearing, with him dressed in lots of layers and 'tatty' clothes suggests that he might be homeless, but rebellious as well. The fact that he is dressed in a way that suggests he might be homeless, there is a possibility that he is imagining all of the spiders in the video, because he might be crazy and all the surrealism is just a figment of his imagination.
I like this video personally because of the way that the video, cuts and camera work fit well in with the beat of the music, keeping it upbeat and allowing the flow of the music to be viewed visually as well as through the music. It has a clever and yet surreal and lucid narrative that keeps me interested everytime I watch it, noticing more things that I didn't notice before.
